Put this on the “I must make this, but I think it might be crazy” list.
Maybe as an accompaniment to my Buddhacello.
Donuts and Fried Chicken in Philly →
A place to try next time (like never) I’m in Philadelphia, what’s interesting is that I’ve tagged the owner’s Israeli restaurant as a place I want to go to as well.
Plus, come on, donuts!!!

Pretty interesting story on test kitchens - the Food section of the LA Times is one of the few reasons I haven’t cancelled my subscription.

800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria set to open in... →
What was supposed to be January/February 2011, but is now January 2012 is the Umami Burger pizzeria (wood-fired).
Umami (IMHO) is overrated but the head chef is from Michael Mina, and should be pretty good. But odd location (former Daphne’s) in Westwood. But close to me, yay!

Sarah Gim rocks - there’s no other way to put it - and while this might be a bit OCD, it’s a great list of the 99 essential LA restaurants… .
Ones I hope to hit and post here. Or on Nosh.

The Lost Art of Buying From a Butcher -... →
Love that the local butcher is coming back in style - wish that there was information on the Kosher butcher market, which seems to have survived the grocery store onslaught.
Maybe that’s my next business - opening an LA butcher shop. :)

Some fun playground drinks …
americandrink:
At the end of a busy school day, kids need some love from a relaxed, supportive parent. At the end of a busy work day, some of us need a little help to become that parent. Here’s what to do when the closest mixer is a juice box.

– California’s Olive Oils Challenge Europe’s - NYTimes.com
Pretty fascinating article on the California Olive Oil growers/makers, and the push into the home and the market.
Yes, I’m gonna go look for some of these brands.

Too many farmers' markets →
Interesting article in the NYT that the push for more fresh food has turned into a glut of farmers’ markets.
The people involved forget that these are actual farmers and have to travel, etc.
Interesting sidenote is that Westwood has a farmers’ market, and it seems to do just ok. Not sure if the students don’t care about fresh and local, or if the local residents don’t...
At Vacant Homes, Foraging for Fruit →
One way to eat local - find the vacant homes and grab the fruit/veggies that were planted.
While it might be illegal - or gray - the issue that was ignored is that letting the fruit rot can bring in vermin. It’s a safer, smarter way to keep the ecosystem going.
And sorta fun. I don’t think there are any foreclosed home fruit trees in my area, though.

The elusive holy grail... →
Raspberry Pop-Tarts. I’ve seen them ONCE in my life at the grocery store, bought 4 boxes and made them last as long as possible.
But it’s like a fun scavenger hunt, or like Halley’s Comet. I see them once every few years. And it’s worth it.

Interesting that they’re going for inexpensive recipes with a quarterly magazine, website and other “digital” stuff.
Cheerios cereal celebrates its 70th birthday →
Cheerios is the most popular cereal brand in American grocery stores. In fact, one out of every eight boxes of cereal sold in the U.S. is some variety of Cheerios.
A plant in Buffalo, New York has been producing the cereal since 1941. More than 10 shapes and sizes were considered before the makers settled on little Os.
I’ve never liked Cheerios, but that’s because they...
Taco Bell Can't Give Its Food Away (on Facebook) →
Not sure what to think of this - of course, I can count the times I’ve been in a Taco Bell on one hand.
But most large corps have issues on engaging and conversing. So not a shocker.
And it IS food related (yay food blog) - how can you NOT be able to give away food?! College kids, anyone?!
